New beginnings!

Happy Monday, we are now starting to dig at a new site, BcGn-15, which we last visited in 2024. The goal this year is to focus on the house and determine the extent and character of this site. Hopefully we will get a better idea of the temporal phasing.

Our text excavations in this phase of the field school are a chance for the students to put in practice the skills they have learned and take more responsibility for the excavation and recording.

Mason and Romy are excavating a unit that will hopefully reveal the southeast corner of the structure.
Julie, Greg, and Jordan are examining an area that is near a midden deposit previously identified last season.
Zenya, Asha, and Matie’s unit is to see the extent of the domestic deposit away from the structure.

After the first three excavation areas were underway, we also laid in a unit in the midden deposit visible on the surface. The surface material is more recent, probably 1950s, but we are curious if the midden deposits have an earlier phase that we can link to some of the artifacts we found last season.

Matie and Julie have been assigned to the new midden unit.

Back at the original site, they are continuing to excavate the rubble feature and work on the well. We are starting to accumulate enough artifacts that we can start washing and processing soon, it will be nice to see what we have been finding.
