Site’s put up for the season!

We packed a lot into today. With rain threatening to arrive around 3pm, we decided to try and get as much excavation and recording done as possible with the aim that every unit open would be backfilled and we would be completely off site by the end of the day.

Megan, Syd, and Samantha managed to get their unit down a fair amount after this picture was taken this morning, but we decided in the end that it would be better to record and tarp it to finish another season. This unit might tell us more about the rear of the house!
Greg at the upper left is holding the prism so that Haley and Jordan can collect elevation and coordinate data for the unit before backfilling.
Modern technology, who needs walkie-talkies or hand signals when you can just call across site to pass the information! (That tree in the background fell down during the ice storm in March!)

Some of the units revealed their secrets early on, and others remain a mystery. This new unit was supposed to tell us about the wall alignment, but instead raised more questions as we found a cement footing instead. Possibly this is from a later addition to the house?

That angled line by Jacob’s feet is one edge of a poured cement wall, instead of the mortared fieldstones we were expecting!

Oh well, backfilled it was, regardless!

James shows evidence that the Entropy Fairies have been busy at work in the equipment bins.
Operation Areas that we intend to investigate in further detail were recorded, tarped, and then backfilled. This will enable us to locate the level of interest quickly and preserve the extent of the excavated area over the winter.
Lauren, Maddy, Avery, and Cameron demonstrate the capacity of their unit before backfilling.

The rain started just as the last units were being backfilled, so we did achieve our goals, hooray. Good-bye for now BcGn-15! This path we have worn will fade away until we come back again next time!

We’ve walked this path so many times!

The digging might be over for this season, but there is still so much to do before the end of the course! Tomorrow we will be working on processing all the artifacts we have recovered in the lab.
