The last day of field school has arrived, the past four weeks have flown by. We met in the classroom to go over the ministry licensing system, and also to discuss where/how to go on in archaeology (either as a job or in academia) and some names of local CRM companies that will likely be hiring in the summer.
After a little break, the students got to try their hand for a couple hours at doing some artifact analysis of some of the material we recovered this season. The digging and the cleaning is only the start, now we need to figure out what the artifacts are, when they date from, and what behaviours can be inferred from them. This all goes into the report, where we can discuss the nature and characteristics of the site and the people who lived there.
But all too soon, it was time for a pizza lunch courtesy of James, and we all said our goodbyes!
We had a really great group this season, James and I had a lot of fun with the students. At BcGn-17 we now are pretty confident that there is no remaining trace of the log cabin, and the feature we excavated is a root cellar of some sort that was filled with debris after the house was removed, a more precise date pending when we get through the artifacts. BcGn-15 has revealed some surprises about this house which means we have some more intriguing puzzles to explore in future seasons!

Over the next few weeks, please keep visiting this site, there will be daily student blog posts (beginning May 26th) where you can experience the field school through their eyes. As I get into the analysis I might pop in later in the summer as well with some update posts. Bye for now!
